Saints Only 25–30 Impact Players Away From Something Special Says an Optimistic Moore

Even with the understanding that this season will be a tough road for the New Orleans Saints rebuilding, head coach Kellen Moore believes the team is on the verge of something special.

“We’re just missing a few key pieces to get over the hump,” said Moore at a press conference this afternoon. “I firmly believe we’re only 25–30 impact players away from contending for a win.”

The Saints have struggled overall in recent years and still lack a true identity. This preseason the team has shown just enough promise to keep ticket sales moving, finishing 0-2-1 in the process, though the on-field product remains a work in progress straight out of the New Orleans Department of Public Works. The quarterback competition between Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough has been about as rocky as a Lakeview street, leading Moore to make the unusual decision of naming himself the starter for the season.

Moore stressed the preseason isn’t an indication of what the team is truly capable of and insists only a few shrewd moves need to be made.

“This team is so close. Add in those 25–30 impact players to shore up the offense, defense, and special teams, bring in a few new guys for the front office, grease a few palms, and we could be right there in the thick of things.”

Moore says he believes the offense will kick into gear once the season starts and the defense has developed a much-needed spark under new coordinator Brandon Staley.

“Brandon has been great for the franchise. There’s a different energy on that side of the ball now. Let’s just say it’s nice to have a coordinator who isn’t in the business of apologizing to the Falcons.”

When asked how he foresees the Saints rebuilding season playing out, Moore seemed to have high hopes.

“I’m not making any guarantees here, but if the ball bounces our way we could find ourselves in a position to contend for multiple wins as early as next season. It’s a long road back to having the NFL again wanting to screw us over every postseason, but we’ll get there.”
