Vowing to start training for the upcoming Crescent City Classic probably as soon as tomorrow, Old Metairie resident Emily Haydee said she really, really means it this time.
“Today was just such a long day, but I totally am going to start (training) when I get home tomorrow,” said Haydee who did acknowledge she was at least able to put on the cute new running shoes and workout gear that she bought last weekend at some boutiques on Metairie Road.
“Work was just so stressful today. I really needed to decompress and have some wine time with Rusty (cat).”
27-year-old Haydee said she made a New Year’s resolution to get in shape and targeted this year’s Crescent City Classic as one of her first goals. She has yet to hit the pavement in 2019 due to “things out of her control” but stated she has done pre-training training in preparation for the race.
“I read online that wine is good for circulation and the heart, and you need a good heart to be a runner, so I’ve been drinking as much of it as I can over the past few months and walking around Target for like over an hour every day. Besides, they say drinking wine is the same as spending an hour at the gym.”
Each year, over 20,000 people gather in Downtown New Orleans for an event that attracts everyone from international Elite Athletes to those who walk the entire route carrying cocktails or wearing bunny suits.
“I’ve been binge watching The Amazing Race on Hulu, so I feel, mentally, I’m, like, ready to go.”
While Haydee has never participated in a race of any kind, Haydee believes she has what it takes to accomplish her goal.
“I’ve been binge-watching The Amazing Race on Hulu, so I feel, mentally, I’m, like, ready to go. It’s only six miles. I drive six miles to and from work every day and that’s not hard at all.”
The 10K Crescent City Classic (6.2 miles) is held in New Orleans on the Saturday before Easter Sunday each year. Runners typically train for 8 to 10 weeks before the race or whenever their Apple Watches tell them to get off their asses.
