As gas prices continue to climb, many New Orleans residents say they’re grateful to have access to the city’s public transportation system, which offers a reliable alternative to driving, assuming time isn’t a factor.
Officials note the system remains one of the most affordable ways to get around, particularly for those willing to plan ahead, adjust expectations, and occasionally reconsider their destination.
Riders say the experience also provides added value beyond transportation, with extended wait times allowing for reflection, personal growth, and a deeper appreciation for wherever they eventually arrive.
“Honestly, it’s not bad once you accept you’re just going to be out here for a while,” said one rider, who left for work at 7:15 a.m. and is still optimistic about making it in before lunch. “I’ve definitely saved money on gas. I just spend it now on snacks and things to do while I wait.”
Transit representatives emphasized that while some routes may experience minor delays, the system continues to connect residents to key parts of the city, often within the same general part of the day.
City leaders confirmed they remain confident public transit will continue to serve as a dependable option for those seeking an alternative to the immediate.
