Pitch. Pitch. Pitch. The frustrated New Orleans Baby Cakes are taking their ball and going home… to Wichita, Kansas.
Aggravated about the lack of attendance, merchandise sales, and overall support, even after a brilliant rebranding campaign that changed the franchise’s name from the beloved Zephyrs to the incredible Sons-of-Mitches, er… Baby Cakes, the Triple-A baseball team is moving into a newly renovated stadium in Wichita for the 2020 season.
It is unclear at this point whether the Baby Cakes would take the current logo and colors with them to Kansas or leave them behind for another team, though one local source said the hope is for them to “take that train wreck of a moniker with it.”
“I hate to see them go because of the history here but it is what it is and I really, really, really hope the name goes along with them,” longtime Zephyrs fan Jason Tay said when learning of the shocking move. “All I’ll say to Wichita is no takesy backsies.”
When reached by Neutral Grounds for comment, Baby Cakes general manager Augusto “Cookie” Rojas said the team will definitely remain in the New Orleans area, give or take 866 miles, for 2019, but would not give any further details only saying his real estate agent was on the other line and he “had to go.”
Earlier in the year, the Baby Cakes were under investigation for hiring crisis actors to pose as fans.
